Please join BAWWA for a technical tour focused on water efficiency, energy, and overall water management (and of course beer-making) at this Fairfield brewery. For more than 165 years, Anheuser-Busch has been woven into the cultural fabric of the United States, carrying on a legacy of brewing great-tasting, high-quality beers that have satisfied beer drinkers for generations. Today, they own and operate 23 breweries, 14 distributorships, and 23 agricultural and packaging facilities, and have more than 18,000 colleagues across the United States. They are home to several of America’s most recognizable beer brands, including Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob ULTRA, and Stella Artois, as well as a number of regional craft beers.

They make major investments each year in their breweries and facilities, and in cutting-edge scientific research. They embrace new technologies and innovations so that they can brew, package, transport, and deliver their more than 100 brands in the most environmentally sustainable way possible. Water management and efficiency are essential to their operations.

Presentation: Water, Conflict, and Peace
Morgan Shimabuku

Research Associate, Pacific Institute, Oakland

BAWWA is excited and honored to host this special presentation by Morgan Shimabuku on the topics of water, conflict, and peace. The well-known refrain, that whiskey is for drinking and water is for fighting, rings true, but is an oversimplification of the reality of conflicts involving water. During her talk, Morgan will provide an overview of the different forms of violent conflict around water, with insights and case studies from the Pacific Institute’s database, the Water Conflict Chronology, which for the past 30 years has attempted to track all water-related violent conflicts around the world. She will also discuss solutions for peace and how sustainable water management and nature-based solutions have a role in reducing incidents of violence and conflict.

The Pacific Institute is a global water think tank that combines science-based thought leadership with active outreach to influence local, national, and international efforts in developing sustainable water policies. The Mission of the Institute is to create and advance solutions to the world’s most pressing water challenges. Their Vision is a world in which society, the economy, and the environment have the water they need to thrive now and in the future. To learn more, visit pacinst.org.
