Come join BAWWA for a walking tour of the Alameda County Water District’s Rubber Dam Number 1 (RD1) Fish Passage Facility. The RD1 Fish Passage Facility began operation in 2023. The tour will present an overview of the fish passage facility background, components, its successes, and lessons learned. The RD1 Fish Passage Facility is part of ACWD’s Fish Ladder Operations and Water Stewardship (FLOWS) Program. Through the FLOWS Program, ACWD seeks to enhance fish passage on Alameda Creek while maintaining water supply goals. On an ongoing basis, ACWD operates, monitors, and adaptively manages its creek facilities and coordinates program activities with other watershed stakeholders.
Tour details are as follow:
Tour Size: Limited to 20 people.
Time: Arrive by 2:45 pm to check in at the Niles Community Park. We’ll start a short 10-minute walk to the RD1 Fish Passage Facility. The tour begins promptly at 3:00 pm and will conclude at 4:00 pm.
Attire: Flat, closed-toed shoes and long pants are required. Weather-appropriate attire should also be worn, as the tour is conducted outdoors (comfortable clothing, hats, and sunscreen during summer months).
Parking/Carpooling: Park at the Niles Community Park or in the surrounding street parking.
Registration: RSVP by Thursday, April 9th. Tour spots will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

Following the tour of ACWD’s RD1 Fish Passage Facility, head to Birdhaus Beer Garden in Union City for a no-host bar starting at 4:30 pm. A guest speaker will be presenting at 5:00 pm followed by a Happy Hour.

Speaker: Scott Chenue
Our guest speaker Scott Chenue is the Biology Supervisor in Sunol for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s reservoirs and lands in the Alameda Creek Watershed and the Tuolumne River Watershed. Scott will present a history of the SFPUC fisheries monitoring on Alameda Creek Watershed and highlight the various fish passage improvement projects in the upper Alameda Creek Watershed. He has 28 years of service to the SFPUC and has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources. He oversees the biological monitoring (limnology) of seven SFPUC reservoirs in the two watersheds in addition to fisheries and aquatic resources monitoring programs, operational support monitoring, and ecological restoration monitoring.
